Iran cultivating drought-tolerant medicinal plant in western Hamedan
Hamedan — Capparis, a drought-tolerant medicinal plant with low water requirements, has been introduced for the first time in Asadabad County, situated in Hamedan western province.
According to Moslem Hassanabadi, Director of the Asadabad County Agricultural Organization, 30 hectares of local farmland have been allocated to the cultivation of Capparis as part of efforts to optimize water consumption, strengthen agricultural resilience, and expand alternative cropping patterns adapted to dry conditions.
He highlighted the plant’s wide-ranging economic, environmental, and medicinal advantages, noting its strong resistance to drought, high nutritional and therapeutic value, and its role in combating land degradation and desertification.
The official added that Capparis buds and fruits are traded at premium prices in domestic and international markets, and that scaling up production could create new employment opportunities across the agricultural value chain, including cultivation, processing, and export.
Describing Capparis as a high-value, income-generating, and export-oriented crop, particularly suitable for arid and semi-arid areas, Hassanabadi said its development could play a meaningful role in promoting climate-compatible and sustainable agricultural production.
Hassanabadi further noted that the expansion of greenhouse cultivation is another priority for the county, as it enhances productivity, enables year-round production, reduces water consumption, and creates new job opportunities.
